East London police are searching for two men in police uniforms who shot dead a security guard while trying to rob the Gonubie Post Office on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Warrant Majola Nkohli said two men in police uniform entered the Post Office around 10am.

He said that when they tried to enter through the security gate, a 45-year-old security guard who refused to let them in was shot dead.

Nkohli said the men stole a security guard’s gun and fled in a gateway to Sandy Springs.

A plastic bag containing police uniforms was also seized. Were they police before? Where did they get the police uniform? So, their case is no longer the same, because they have to investigate how they got this uniform.

Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call 08600 10111.

In another incident, it is alleged that on the same day around midday, members from the East London Flying Squad spotted a suspicious vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla parked near a tavern in Santini Informal Settlement, East London. On searching the vehicle, police recovered an automatic rifle with three magazines and ammunition. The four occupants aged between 36 and 40 were arrested and are due to appear in court soon.
