On Tuesday,22 February ,the Buffalo City Metro Municipality has informed its residents based on the findings of the tests that were recently conducted at the plant, it came across turbidity at its uMzonyana Water Treatment Plant. The plant supplies treated drinking water to consumers in the East London and Mdantsane areas.

Buffalo City Municipality has closely been monitoring the quality of raw water, effectiveness of treatment, and water quality post treatment. The alternate treatment chemicals initially improved the quality of treated drinking water, and it has contributed to other operational experience at the treatment plant.

The Municipality has stated that there was an excessive production of sludge during the water treatment process, the sludge needs to be removed to improve the water quality. Laboratory tests will be conducted to confirm if the current water treatment chemicals used are contributing the excessive sludge. The process is set to take up approximately 12 hours to achieve conclusive results.

Certain suburbs are currently experiencing extended water outages due to insufficient supply of water by the system. The municipality is assisting suburbs experiencing water outage with tankers where they have been notified.

Buffalo City Municipality has implemented a precautionary boil water alert to protect the health of consumers. Consumers are advised to boil their water before drinking or cooking, until further notice. BCMM assures its residents that they are treating this matter with utmost urgency and seriousness.
