Makhanda schools to shut down from today over non-delivery of textbooks & Non payment of teacher assistants

The shutdown has already begun.

The School Governing Body Forum in Makhanda has decided to shut down public schools from today.

This comes after the provincial department of education repeatedly failed to deliver stationery for the past three weeks. Until today nothing has been delivered.

Teacher assistants and general school assistants have also not been paid because the Eastern Cape DOE has not paid the schools. The education system in the town is in a state of collapse.

The Azanian Peoples Organisation (Azapo) protested outside the provincial education department offices for two weeks calling for textbooks and stationery but to no avail.

Teaching assistants and general school assistants at these Makhanda schools are affected:

*. Mary Waters High School, NV Cewu Primary, Ntsika High School, George Jacques Primary and DD Siwisa Primary – teaching and general assistants not paid for January as no funds received from ECDOE

*. Good Shepherd Primary – school received a reduced amount from the ECDOE and short paid TA’s in December; in January received no funds so paid from the school’s own funds and no funds forthcoming for February

* St Mary’s Primary – school had to pay teaching and general assistants from its own funds for November, December and could only pay 50% of the wages after receiving nothing from the ECDOE. Teaching and general assistants were not paid anything in January.

*Fikizolo Primary – has not received funds to pay teaching and general assistants in February and will not be able to pay.
