On Saturday morning, floods engulfed Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, killing a young girl.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesman Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, the 18-year-old girl, who was allegedly living in Mdantsane NU3, was found unconscious after three people were reported missing after being swept away in their house.
According to Kinana, the two were rescued by a municipal fire department, while the victim’s body was discovered by paramedics.
Kinana stated, “The docket is open.” However, the deceased’s identity has not been revealed.
More than seven people have also been hospitalized, according to reports. The Buffalo City Municipality has dispatched a disaster management team.
In a statement, municipal spokesman Samkelo Ngwenya said that the municipality’s electricity and water departments were repairing the damage, while others were in the process of repairing damaged roads to flood-affected homes, particularly slums.
“We are evacuating people from houses in Mdantsane, NU1, and our rescue teams are already on standby for the 3 or 18 evacuation of the area.”
Ngwenya stated that as disaster relief efforts continue, Buffalo City has urged those who have not yet been affected to seek alternative shelter.
Following a visit to the affected areas by Mayor Xola Pakati and Inter-Provincial Minister of Cooperation and Culture Xolile Nqatha, the charity ‘Gift Of The Givers’ also assisted with the rescue operation.
