Fikile Mbalula, Minister of Transport was disheartened to learn the death of Linah Malatjie, Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality.
Malatji together with her husband died in hospital after being admitted following a vehicle head-on collision on the R544 road between Gemsbokspruit and Verena, Mpumalanga at 21:30 on Sunday.
Three people were killed in the accident, and the driver of the second vehicle died on the scene.
“Since the commencement of the festive season, another unfortunate passing of South Africans on our highways has occurred. As we return to our places of work, I ask all South Africans traveling on our roads to remain vigilant and follow all traffic laws.”
“I extend my heartfelt sympathies to the families of all those killed or injured in this unfortunate accident, as well as to those who have been affected by this horrible experience during the holiday season. All of this is a shared national tragedy, and it serves as a terrible reminder to all of us to be more cautious, compassionate and responsible on the roads,” said Minister Mbalula.
The root cause of the accident is being investigated by law enforcement.
