On Tuesday, September 14 a 26-year-old male was arrested for being in possession of abalone in Laesonia, West of Pretoria. He is expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate Court today for contravention of the Living Marine and Resources Act and enticement.

The investigation team followed up on intelligence on suspicions of illegal possession of abalone. Upon arrival at the identified business premises the police had pounced on the suspect and found boxes full of live abalone inside the freezers.

The police spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said that the police alongside with Hawks had conducted a search warrant to search the man’s business premises and had found several boxes of abalone stuffed in freezers.

“When the officers had arrested the man, he offered them a bribe of R10 000 to let him go. Police had confiscated the abalone and money”, said Captain Mulamu.

The value of the seized abalone is not yet known. More arrests cannot be ruled out and the investigation continues.
