GOLDEN VOICES WITH GOLDEN HEARTS!

By Lulutho Skeyi

Since the existence and performance of music; music has always been a shared experience that has brought people together within cultures and communities. Gospel music specifically is a deeply shared experience and what a better way for the Mdantsane Gospel Choir to not only just give a communal experience of Gospel music but to also share charity within their community as they donated school uniforms to underprivileged learners at a couple of schools at Mdantsane NU5!

The Mdantsane Gospel Choir (MGC) was formed on the 23rd of February 2013 through a process of auditioning with participants being members of the Mdantsane community. The Mdantsane community has been strongly supporting the MGC but as the old saying goes, “it’s better to give than to receive” thus the MGC took on an initiative to give back to their community for their support in MGC’s music. The Mdantsane Gospel Choir has donated school uniforms to learners from Lunga Junior Primary School and Nzaliseko Primary School. The two schools were identified at a fund raising concert which was held last year on the 29th of November 2020 at Jesus Christ Tabernacle Church (Mdantsane City Mall). The charity event was called the #ProtectAChild #SaveAChild Charity Event.

The #ProtectAChild #SaveAChild charity event held last year November 2020 by the MGC intended to support underprivileged learners within the Mdantsane community. The uniforms donated to Lunga Junior Primary School and Nzaliseko Primary School came from the funds raised in the November 2020 concert where school clothing items such as boys grey trousers, girl’s tunic, white school shirts, school jerseys, school shoes and socks were donated. Pastors, churches, artists, and media houses assisted to help make the initiative a success. The MGC biography states that “Music as a form of art is well received in the underprivileged communities and it serves as a beacon of hope to members of the Mdantsane community, especially youngsters.”

Leadership and founder of MGC Luckie Cecil Shongwe said that he was happy that the initiative was a success and he mentioned that his biggest wish is to see the initiative go further in the next coming years. Ward 11 councillor, Maswabada Gcilise pledged to support the MGC in making its annual initiative with hopes to benefit the whole community of Mdantsane. MGC is not just bonding with their community through music but through giving as well!
