Operation Basadi led by Amothole District Women yielded good results


EASTERN CAPE – In an effort to fight the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, the District Women’s Network and other external stakeholders embarked on a two-day Operation Basadi on Friday, 20 August and Saturday 21 August 2021 at Butterworth under the command of Colonel Qabaka. The operation was focusing on the serving of protection orders, awareness campaigns in Hotspot areas, execution of search warrants, tracing of suspects on gender-based violence, searching for drugs and closing down of illegal outlets at Extension 7, Sikithi Informal Settlement and Ndabakazi.

During the first day, members were executing search warrants and tracking suspects on gender-based violence cases and closing down of illegal liquor outlets. During the operation Police conducted patrols doing stop and searches as part of crime prevention strategy and dangerous weapons were confiscated. Four suspects aged between 26 and 46 years were arrested for Rape, Dealing in drugs and selling liquor without license, the shebeen was closed and liquor was confiscated.

On day two Operation Basadi continued with a roadblock at Ndabakazi Junction where 198 vehicles and 252 people were searched and fines to the value of R23 000.00 were issued to the motorists. Five hundred pamphlets on gender-based violence were distributed and eighteen Protection orders were served and recipients were sensitized about violence on women and children.
