During the early hours of July 26, a fire broke out in one of the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) properties in Butterworth, a building called Bashee Court. The Mbashe Local Municipality Fire Department was called and the fire was put out shortly preventing a further spread.
Bashee Court has twenty units and is in its fully capacity. Out of the twenty units, three were burnt. Fortunately, the tenants were evacuated in time and there were no fatalities.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, however the ECDC is working with the South African Police Services (SAPS), Mnquma Local Municipality Fire Department to investigate what may have caused the fire.
“A word of gratitude to the various stakeholders that assisted in putting out the fire and those that offered all kinds of help to the tenants and their families. The damage to property and the loss of personal belongings is deeply regretted”, said ECDC Chief Executive Officer Ayanda Wakaba.
