AntiGaingUnit detectives arrest robbery suspect: Gqeberha

EASTERN CAPE – On Monday, 21 June 2021, at about 09:45, two detective officers from the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (Gang Investigation) were travelling in an unmarked police vehicle on their way to Bethelsdorp on investigation when they witnessed an armed robbery taking place. Detective Sergeant Riaan Meswan and Detective Constable Warren Hanse were driving on the R75 when they noticed two males harassing the 24-year-old victim. As they passed the trio, they realised that the person was being robbed.

They immediately stopped their vehicle and chased after the two suspects who ran off in opposite directions. The suspect who had the victim’s bag ran off into nearby bushes and disappeared. The members got into their vehicle, made a U-turn and pursued after the other suspect. The 24-year-old suspect was apprehended while attempting to climb over a fence. A 9mm pistol was found in his possession. Ownership of the firearm is yet to be established.

The suspect is detained on a charge of armed robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in court soon.
