Walter Sisulu University remains shocked and regretful after learning about the death of its first year student.
The student was enrolled as a first year student for the National Diploma: Civil Engineering course at the institution’s Butterworth Campus.
Reports say the student was discovered dead and identified by fellow students just outside a local pub not far from campus.
According to deceased’s friends, it was just after 10pm when they decided to go look for her as she had not returned from the bathroom for over ten minutes. This is the second death at the institution in just less than three weeks where a student was reported dead after falling from a balcony at one of the institutions’ residential at the Mthatha campus.
WSU Spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo said the institution stands against gender based violence. “The university condemns acts of violence of any nature on and off campus. Violence against women and children has reached unprecedented proportions that should be a great concern to everyone” said Tukwayo. The university is still waiting for an official report from the South African Police Service.
