Maya Montessori School: Donating to the underprivileged

By Monique Lewis

The Maya Montessori School is a based in Gonubie, East London. It is founded and directed by Coral Yelseth. She lived and completed her studies in London, United Kingdom then came back to South Africa and opened a Montessori school.

The school started in December 2002 and it is an authentic Montessori school, they follow all the Montessori principles and they are the only school in East London and they also affiliate with South African Montessori association.

The name Maya comes from Corals friend’s daughter who died from cancer so the school was named after her. Coral says,” I named the school after my friend’s daughter Maya, who passed away from cancer, she asked me to name the school after her daughter and the school will succeed.

The school has started a small project called ” Caring Hearts” an initiative to collect unused, outgrown and second hand toys for unprivileged children in our community. Through this project we hope to teach our children at Maya’s the qualities of kindnesses, compassion and love towards those less unfortunate than ourselves. On the May 28 the school was blessed the presence of the Helping those in need organisation, they are a Non-profit organisation who extend a hand in helping the community, the school collected toys, blankets etc. and donated it to The helping those in need organisation to give out to those who are very much in need.

Coral further said, “Thank you for the lovely things brought for our nature table yesterday it really has brought the nature table to life and was great excitement redoing it yesterday at circle time. We continue with our monthly project, farming and autumn”.
