A melody of African sounds combined with a touch of Jazz

Ubuntu Makwande was recently formed in 2020 during the ekhaya sessions during the Covid 19 Pandemic live stream sessions.

“We performed in the session together but the chemistry between us is the one thing that didn’t allow us to turn a blind eye on each other that is when we decided to be a band and named ourselves UBUNTU MAKWANDE. We have Luphumlo Batyi on drums, Luthando Kasika on keys and Ziyanda Bans the vocalist,” said the djembe drummer Siliziwe Syleez Jako.

“The name Ubuntu Makwande was inspired by our Xhosa roots that we believe ubuntu is an African spirit that shows peace, love and humanity and Makwande means the destiny and it is the culture of Ubuntu,” said Jako. He continued to add, “This band is inspired by our passion of poetry with a little bit of jazz that is why we have our contemporary jazz with the African sounds hence we have the Djembe drum and we will add an new instrument that is Mbira.”

The band performs at the Ekhaya sessions, Ekhaya Festival, Ekupholeni lounge, Kwa Jeya Jazz conner and can be booked for weddings and other traditional events.

For bookings you can contact Syleez on 0718323907 or Luthando on 078 283 3553. Their videos can be found on Facebook at Syleez SA or Luthando Tyrone Kasika or Luthando B Batyi.
