Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has expressed shock after learning of a tragic accident that claimed four lives of the SAPS members and one Civilian on Sunday morning.
All five passengers are believed to have been in the same vehicle when the accident occurred just outside Engcobo, on the national road towards Mthatha.
Reports state that the four officers were returning from the Chris Hani District where they were conducting crime prevention operations and awareness campaigns with communities and schools.
The deceased members aged between 25 and 35 were stationed at the Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo districts respectively, and they include three males, one female who is a Public Service Act member and one civilian person.
The Provincial Commissioner, has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. “As SAPS management we are shattered by these sad news. We do not need this and the untimely heart-breaking departure of our young and up coming leaders has left us dumbfounded. As the department is in the process of informing their next of kin, the names and other intimate details relating to the deceased will therefore not be made available at this stage” said Commissioner Ntshinga.
The Commissioner is expected to visit the families of the deceased during the course of the week and circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation and cases of Culpable Homicide has been registered.
