The Eastern Cape Department of Health has activated an additional Coronavirus vaccination site at Frere Hospital in East London on March 3.
The hospital received 1040 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on March 1. The first in line to get the jab are the healthcare workers in ICU, High Care, COVID-19 ward, casualty and emergency wards.
The rollout of the vaccine in the Eastern Cape started two weeks ago at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha and Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha.
Dr Zweli Mkhize is encouraged that the first target of 80 000 vaccines has been met and South Africa has exhausted its first batch of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine in two weeks, with 83 570 healthcare workers vaccinated as of March 3.
“We have taken every opportunity to learn from this process and continue to refine the programme in preparation for the rollout to the larger community in the subsequent phases,” said Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize.
The first consignment of the single-dose vaccine arrived in South Africa in February, while the second batch arrived this past weekend.
