During the preparations for the funeral service of Tata Nelson Mandela in 2013 there are people who have been accused of money laundering. Eastern Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba is one of those that have been accused. She appeared in the East London Magistrate Court for money laundering. Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane opted to dismiss MEC Gomba.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) Eastern Cape welcomes and fully supports the decision announced by Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane.

Premier Mabuyane announced the decision to relieve MEC Sindiswa Gomba of her duties to allow her time and space to focus on her court case. SACP is of the view that Premier Mabuyane has acted in the best interest of both MEC Gomba, the ANC led government and the movement.

The decision is consistent with the spirit of the decision communicated by the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Working Committee (PWC) that all its members and leaders who are facing charges of corruption and serious crimes should step-aside immediately in the interest of the movement.

SACP is of the firm view that it is important to implement the renewal of both their movement and their country through action. Therefore, the SACP takes this opportunity to emphasise the importance of organisational renewal and unity of the ANC and all their organisations.

The renewal of the ANC should be anchored on the full-implementation of its resolutions particularly on the matters relating to how it is perceived in society. The ANC must through action reconnect with the society in order for it to reclaim its moral standing in society, this should be done by acting against any act or omission that negatively impacts on the standing of the ANC. The ANC image has been negatively impacted by allegations of corporate capture of their state and leading sections of their movement; and allegations of rampant corruption where they govern.

SACP Provincial Spokesperson Siyabonga Mdodi said here in the province part of those devastating blows to the image of the ANC are but not limited to the arrests related to the IPTS in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality; arrests related to the Nelson Mandela funeral scandal in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, allegations of corruption relating to the Nelson Mandela funeral in the KSD Local Municipality and Provincial Government Departments. In all these matters the ANC must not only be heard but seen to be taking decisive action against corruption perceived or real.

He added while the expectation is that implicated comrades should as revolutionaries act in a manner that preserves both their integrity and that of the movement guided by revolutionary consciousness.

“For the organisational consistency, the implementation of this important decision should not only be left to implicated comrades alone to exercise their revolutionary conscience, the organisation must also take the lead to ensure consistency. The organisation must appreciate that owing to the rot in our movement some comrades lack the revolutionary morality that is required by the renewal programme,” he said.
