SACP Skenjana Roji welcomes the suspension of two BCMM Councillors

The South African Communist Party (SACP) Skenjana Roji District (Buffalo City Metro) welcomes the action taken against two Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) councillors for allegedly violating the Municipal Systems Act.

Through a media statement, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Comrade Xolile Nqatha announced that that the suspended councillors were involved in acts of fraud and corruption, as well as misuse and abuse of social relief interventions meant to mitigate the impact of the national lockdown on the working people and the vulnerable.

Last year, the SACP in the district called on the ANC-led government to act decisively on all reported acts of corruption and wrong-doing, especially during the period of the National Disaster where many procurement processes have been relaxed. This call was made following reports the Party received that certain councillors were involved in acts of corruption, stealing and redirecting food parcels meant for destitute families that were in need of relief, to unverified and undeserving beneficiaries.

As such, we welcome this bold and decisive move by the MEC for CoGTA in the Eastern Cape after the BCMM Council failed to act and take appropriate measures against the councillors who’s reported actions compromised the credibility and integrity of the municipality. The decisive action undertaken by MEC Nqatha demonstrates that there is sufficient legislative framework to decisively deal with malfeasance, what is required is a political will and a desire to act in the best interest of the people.

We call upon the African National Congress (ANC) as the deploying organisation to take swift action against wrongdoing in the renewal period and not to tail government.

As the SACP in the district we will continue to expose and fight corruption and all forms of corporate capture of the state.
