An off-duty policeman arrested a man wanted for burglary after recognising him at a private funeral in Dordercht on Saturday (16 January 2021).

Constable Mtshakazana spotted the suspect, arrested him and sent him to the Jamestown police station using his private motor vehicle.

The suspect was detained and is expected to appear in Jamestown magistrates’ court today (Tuesday, 19 January) facing a charge of house breaking with an unknown intent.

The man allegedly entered a house through a window with the intent to commit an offence. Community members spotted him and gave chase and the suspect fled the scene without stealing anything.

Acting SAPS District Commissioner Brigadier Rudolph Adolph commended the member on his attentiveness and the arrest.

“As a police officer you take an oath to serve and protect the community which means you are on duty 24 hours of a day and this is exactly what was displayed by Cst Mtshakazana,” he said.
