THE ECPG DEPTUY PUBLIC PROTECTOR’S REMARKS ABOUT PUBLIC HOSPITALS

ECPG STATEMENT ON THE DEPTUY PUBLIC PROTECTOR’S REMARKS ABOUT PUBLIC
HOSPITALS

The Eastern Cape provincial government notes the remarks of the Deputy Public Protector on the condition of health infrastructure, facilities, services provided to patients by the hospitals she visited
in the Eastern Cape Province.

While the remarks of the Deputy Public Protector are made before the full report on the matter is shared with government as demanded by the Public Protector Act, the provincial government is addressing challenges in our health system for the benefit of our people.

We are proud of the great work of many of our healthcare workers and other personnel in public hospitals who are taking good care of the people infected by COVID-19 who are admitted at these hospitals. The remarks of Deputy Public Protector come at the time when our government has completed refurbishments at 52 health facilities in the province, with work at other facilities nearing completion.

We continue attending to the challenges in our health facilities so that we can improve quality of our services. We do this to ensure that all our hospitals provide quality health care to our people at all times in order for us to improve the health profile of the people of the Eastern Cape.

We have now provided oxygen, high care and ICU facilities to many hospitals in rural parts of our province that did not have such services and resources before to ensure that communities in these parts of our province have access to such health services.

Construction of a new building at one of
the hospitals she visited, the Nessie Knight Hospital in Sulenkama, is nearing completion.

The work of the Deputy Public Protector and her visit to the hospitals she visited is important because it is part of the checks and balances that helps government to improve performance and provision of services to the people of our province in line with the Batho Pele principles and our
constitution.
