The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is set to start on October 17, as announced by Chairperson Irvin Khoza recently.
Khoza confirmed in a press conference that the season will get underway with the MT8 competition with the Premiership set to start on October 24.
The prize-money for the league winners will remain the same as last season at R15 million with no increase due to the current economic climate as the main factor. With the new 2020/2021 season comes a new sponsor in DStv.
“Because of the economic climate it forces us to do things differently and we have constraints at the PSL,” Khoza said. “I did indicate in one of my press conferences that we don’t have Telkom any longer as a sponsor and Absa has just left us.”
There is a blockbuster opening match in the new PSL season as Kaizer Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns. After pipping Chiefs to the last-ever Absa Premiership title on the final day of 2019/20 season in emphatic fashion, the domestic treble winners will open up their season against Gavin Hunt’s new side. Hunt has been appointed as the new Chiefs coach.
Sundowns, who themselves have new joint head coaches in Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena after Pitso Mosimane departed to join Egyptian giants AL-Ahly.
