Five shot dead in Tsolo

The vicious shooting of five people, believed to be family members, at Magutywa Village on Saturday afternoon (12 September) has sent shockwaves through the communities of Tsolo, in the OR Tambo District.

Preliminary report indicates that a group of three unidentified male suspects, driving a silver grey Toyota double cab vehicle, arrived at a homestead where there was a traditional ceremony at about 5.45pm.

Two of the suspects, who are alleged to have been carrying an AK47 rifle and a pistol, proceeded to the yard whilst one remained in the vehicle.

The report further suggests that without a word, they started shooting at three men aged between 28 and 78 in the yard who died instantly.

It is further alleged that the suspects drove up into the same village where they came across another men aged 28 whom they shot and seriously injured.

The person was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, for medical attention.

According to the information, the suspects proceeded further to a house in the same administrative area where they shot and killed a 73 year old elderly man who is believed to be part of the first four family members who were attacked earlier.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the motive for the killing has not yet been established.

“However, cases of murder and attempted murder have been registered at Tsolo SAPS for investigation. No arrest is made at this stage,” he said.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has ordered the establishment of an integrated task team to prioritise the investigation and ensure that everyone responsible for this heartless incident is brought to justice.
