Molteno protest ends amid tear gas, rubber bullets

A service delivery protest in Molteno against poor service delivery at Enoch Mgijima Municipality ended abruptly on Monday (31 August) when police allegedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protestors.

Several hundred protestors had joined the shutdown and march. Organisers say they were peaceful and had started singing songs after the mayor didn’t show up as promised, when police started firing.

The crowd dispersed soon after.

The Mthwaza Civil Rights Movement (MCRM) organised Monday’s strike and shutdown of Molteno to protest the failure of the municipality to maintain infrastructure, keep the electricity on, reduce unemployment and retain businesses in the town.

Molteno SAPS communications officer could not be reached for comment.
