Seven people lost their lives while seven sustained injuries after a vehicle overturned. The occupants were using public transport from the town of Ngcobo on August 11.
Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the incident happened about 17H45 on the R408 road in Ngcobo at Xonya Location towards Dutywa.
“The vehicle Toyota LDV was travelling from Ngcobo to the locations as mostly are from Ngxamagele Location some from same family members commonly used as public transport on the rural areas with 14 occupants including the driver. Driver lost control of the vehicle to overturn seven occupants lost their lives (all females) age between 25 to 50 years old while 7 sustained two critical 3 serious 2 sustained 2 minor injuries including driver. The injured taken to All Saints Hospital for further medical assistance critical injured taken to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital for further medical assistance,” he said.
It is alleged that speeding and a lack of driving experience were the main contributing factors for the accident.
A case of culpable homicide had been opened at Ngcobo Saps for further investigation.
