Iconic Broadcaster Dies

Iconic South African Radio and TV stalwart, Bob Mabena, 51, has died. Mabena was a renowned television and radio host. Mabena’s current employer, Power FM, said in a statement that he had succumbed to a heart condition. Mabena worked at MSG Afrika as the station manager of POWER 98.7 and hosted the POWER Breakfast Show.

“It is with deep grief and pain that we announce that POWER 98.7 Breakfast Host, Mr Bob Mabena passed away this afternoon, Monday 10 August 2020, from cardiac arrest. The family is coming to terms with his passing and respectfully requests the public to afford them the appropriate space,” reads the release.

Mabena’s stint at Radio Metro brought with it national exposure in the form of variety TV shows, with the likes of Pick a Tune and Studio Mix, to name a few. He was also a singer and released several albums. 

Mabena worked in radio and broadcasting since 1989 at institutions like Radio Bop, Metro FM, Heart FM, 947 and for the South African Broadcasting Corporation with a career spanning over 31 years.
